Kenyan Beef and Potato Pilau
Beef with rice and potato in a broth filled seasoned with Pilau massala.

Step 1/3
Sauté Aromatics and Beef
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 Onion
- 1 tsp Ginger
- 2 Garlic Clove
- 5g Fresh Cilantro
- 150g Beef
Heat olive oil in a pot over medium-high heat ina pot. Add the diced onion, sautéing until softened and fragrant for about 5 minutes. Then minced garlic, ginger and fresh cilantro, sautéing until softened and fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Add the diced beef, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste and cooking until browned on all sides, approximately 5-6 minutes.
Step 2/3
Add Spices and Rice
- 1/4 tsp Ground Cumin
- 1/4 tsp Paprika
- 1/4 tsp Ground Cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp Ground Cardamom
- 1/8 tsp Ground Clove
- 40g Parboiled Rice, Uncooked
- 100g Potato
- 1 Roma Tomato
Stir in ground cumin, paprika, cinnamon, ground cardamom, ground cloves, salt, and pepper, cooking for another minute until the spices are fragrant. Add the roma tomato, rice, and diced potato, stirring to coat everything with the spices and beef mixture, cooking for another 4 minutes until the tomatoes have released their liquid.
Step 3/3
Cook and Serve
- 300mL Beef Broth
Pour in the beef broth, scraping any fond at the bottom of pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 20-30 minutes, or until the rice and potato is cooked and the liquid is absorbed, adding more beef broth if needed. Once cooked, fluff the pilau with a fork and serve hot.
